Some Interesting Facts About Alaska

SIZE: 586,412 square miles (1 mile = 1,64 km), 1/5 of the size of the USA, the biggest state of the US.
Alaska has the northernmost point of the United States (Barrow, only 800 miles south of the north pole) as well as the easternmost (Semisopochnoi Island in the Aleutian Islands) and the westernmost one! This is possible since Alaska reaches out over the International Date Line.

MOUNTAINS: 17 of the 20 highest mountains of the USA are in Alaska. 19 peaks reach higher than 7400 feet / 4600 m. Mt. McKinley with 9800 foot (6100 m) is the highest mountain in the US. The natives called it Denali - the big one.

GLACIERS: Alaska has more active glaciers than the rest of the inhabited world. The biggest one is the Malaspina Glacier covering 850 square miles.

VOLCANOES: There are over 70 active volcanoes in Alaska. The biggest eruption in the last century was caused by the Novarupta Volcano in Katmai National Park in 1912.

EARTHQUAKES: Earthquakes happen frequently. The strongest one measured on the North American continent took place in central Alaska in 1964. It reached 8.4

RIVERS: The Yukon River with a length of 2000 miles is the 3rd biggest in the USA. There are over 3000 rivers and 3 million lakes in Alaska. The biggest one - Lake Iliamna - covering over 1000 square miles.

CAPITOL: Juneau is the only capitol in the United States without road connection. It can be reached only by aircraft or boat.
